Definition:
AN ITEM WHICH CONTROLS BOTH THE DIRECTION AND THE RATE OF FLOW OF FLUID IN DIRECT RESPONSE TO A PRIMARY CONTROL OF COMPARATIVELY LOW LEVEL FORCE. IT IS USED FOR POSITIONING A LINEAR ACTUATING CYLINDER ASSEMBLY, AND FOR CONTROLLING THE RATE OF TRAVEL OF THE PISTON. THE PRIMARY CONTROL FORCE MAY BE MECHANICAL, HYDRAULIC, AND/OR ELECTRICAL.
