A TRANSPARENT ITEM CONSISTING OF PRESTRESSED PIECES OF GLASS, WITH STRAIGHT PARALLEL SURFACES. PRESTRESS RESULTS FROM HEATING UP TO FUSING TEMPERATURE FOLLOWED BY UNIFORM QUENCHING ON BOTH SIDES. QUICK SHRINKING PRODUCES A HIGH SURFACE TENSION WHICH ONLY CAN BE BROKEN DOWN BY A HEAVY MECHANICAL LOAD. THE SHATTERED GLASS CRUMBLES INTO SPHERICAL NON-SPLINTERING PIECES. IT MAY BE HEAT RESISTANT OR TINTED AND IS GENERALLY USED WHERE SAFETY CHARACTERISTICS SUCH AS IN MOTOR-VEHICLE WINDOWS ARE REQUIRED. EXCLUDES GLASS, LAMINATED.
